Hello I am looking to get 4 hens. I want my own eggs. Any advice for the new guy?

My advice is to research the breeds you get. If you are looking for egg layers for beginners I would definitely recommend Barred Plymouth Rocks, Rhode Island Reds, Easter Eggers, and Sex-links. I like to get chicks instead of older chickens. Raising chickens is very rewarding and each chicken has their own sweet personality!

Edit: Easter Eggers (EEs) are often sold as Ameraucanas at D&B, Dunlap, and many other hatchereys and stores. If they are actually EEs than stores might label them as "Americanas".

I recommend you build your coop and not buy a prefab. Then I suggest you build a lot bigger and stronger than you think you need. In the long run, you'll be glad you did!

What are your plans for a coop?

I suggest more than four hens! Build a coop bigger than you need. Even if you don’t fill it, there will be days when the girls can’t or won’t go outside. The extra room will keep them from getting on each other’s nerves.
I also suggest understanding that you’re likely to be tempted by all the various breeds and colors. This is normal, and you can try another breed in the future.
