Hello and welcome! I am also in Alabama - located in NE. The biggest challenges we have had are the cold wind and driving rain. We’ve added some walls and tarps (kept a couple feet at the top to allow for air flow). Also - raccoons And rats. The raccoon had to be trapped and released several miles away. The rats gave us a challenge - finding a way to trap them without poison and a trap that chickens can’t find/get into. Hubby built a metal box with a hole in it and a flip up door. Trap inside with bait - ta da! Now that the lovely family of three rats are dead and the raccoon has found a new home - all is well. Good luck and we look forward to seeing pictures of your feathered friends!
