I found they are very resilient!! Mine have moved up from a square box with a roost and some hay to a fancy coop!!!! but for starters I use flock raiser from tractor supply and depending on the number of chickens even a small dog lot covered with a roost would work!!

Im new from Indiana. You will need Chick feed from your local tractor supply. Water, heat lamp, and shelter to begin with. Chicks need to stay warm. There are loads of information here. I find people willing to jump in and help with questions.
