Hello everyone,
So I've had chickens on and off my whole life, my mother's side of the family used to run a chicken farm, so I guess it's in my blood. The first time I personally hatched and raised chickens was when I was 10 with a home made incubator, shipped RIR eggs and lots of hand turning. The chicks that hatched were for laying eggs and as pets and lived to be 8, 7, and 9 respectively. Recently after realizing I can keep hens in my backyard in the city I live I decided to get a small flock going again and since I love talking chicken, figured I'd join :)

:welcome!!

What kind of hens do you have now for your backyard flock?

Right now I'm at the incubating myself some chickens stage. I have a friend who has a mix of blue copper and red marans and some various Easter eggers and she's given me some eggs to hatch, honestly no idea what kind of mix I'm going to get, but should get some olive eggers.

Welcome to byc!!
Hi all! I'm not super new just get terribly busy (work full-time) and drop out once in a while. I have 11 ladies...3 Sussex, 1 Black Copper Maran, 3 Cream Legbar, 4 Isa Browns...1 Australorp Roo.... The joke is...I was done with Roos since my Legbar roo was mean and came at me and my grand-kids until he lost :( No more roos for me except I bought chicks back in Feb and my Austrolorp is a he instead of a she. He is very handsome and mild mannered so he will live. I am doing a new run and wondered if anyone has any simple plans they might like to share. I live in the mountains and have lost 2 1/2 flocks over the last 10 years to stray dogs so I don't free range anymore.

I did want to say this site has always provided me the best info and help even if yall never knew. I love my ladies and don't think I will ever get tired of them.

You might consider an electrified fence just outside of your run. Otherwise the dogs will still find a way to get them. Sorry for your major losses
