Hello everyone! I'm from Plainwell, Michigan (N of Kalamazoo and S of Grand Rapids) and was hoping to find some "locals" who are into raising chickens. We got our first chicks in April and ended up with 2 roos and 12 pullets. LOVE them! "Polar", our King Roo is hilarious! He was named that because we weren't sure if he was "bipolar".....All are gentle and come when you call. A few weeks ago I got 7 silkies who are about 8 weeks old now and I think I may have 3 roosters in that bunch. Is it allright to have that many males, all together? Like I said, we're new to this. Chickens are better than TV! I'm hoping to make some friends from near and far on this forum. Thanks for having me on board!

Having 3 roosters in with 5 hens is very lopsided. They will tear your hens up. Then with 12 hens to two roos, that makes 5 roos all told. That's a LOT of roos. If you put the new 3 roos in their own enclosure, they should be okay together. I don't know if you want them for breeding or eating.. If you put all 5 roosters in an enclosure, they will fight. Even the 3 brothers may fight a little, but just to keep pecking order established. But once they start feeling manly, they will be attacking your hens all day long, and the hens will have feathers ripped out and possibly worse.

Well as long as Polar is the only thing he's "bi" at. As for friends near and far, I fill both of those, I'm "near sighted" and "far out".
I suppose only those over 50 will get "far out".

Lee Anne, welcome from another Michigander here in Columbiaville! (just north of Lapeer!)

join us on the Michigan thread!!!

having three males is better than two. there will be a pecking order established. two will constantly battle for top billing. they will however, wear your ladies out.

you need to come to my house and get some more girls!
