My name is Donna.

I have been raising backyard chickens in the city South Texas for a year.

I have a few chickens. Mixed breed Faverolles and some Isabella Brahman chickens.
Early this summer I feed my adult birds some watermelon and two of my three hens had loose bowels one died and one has almost gotten better. I don't feed watermelon ever again.

l love the eggs when I can get them, right now the two one year old hens stopped laying eggs. I think the summer heat is factor.
I love the way my birds communicate with each other and with me.
Chickens are not my pets, I raise the birds for meat and eggs.

I have a 7 year old Rat Terrier named Lucy, she has learned to leave the chickens alone.
Lucy loves to chase rats, possums and cats that don't belong in her backyard.

I have a 11 year old big fat domestic cat named Wiggy that loves to watch the chickens.
I work at an HVAC company weekdays and I volunteer with Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts.
I found your website while searching for information on chickens.
I don't know why I joined BYC, I have healthy distrust of social media.

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow

I am so sorry for your loss, :hugsnever easy on the heart. The heat probably was the cause of death, chickens start to struggle when temps hit mid to upper 90s. Higher and it can kill them.

Welcome to our community!
