New to laying!

Mine love shells too.
It wouldn't bother me a bit if mine never laid another egg. I have 2 so far that have gone through henopause hoping the rest sail through without issues.

I'm not sure I'll ever understand people keeping poultry *just* for egg production, they have such great personalities! Mine are almost constantly making me laugh and smile. Hard work, but very rewarding!
My parents are surprised that I personally don't want to eat my duck eggs, they figure it's them "earning their keep" but I don't see the dogs laying any eggs and they cost a fortune to keep! Ducks are just like that, to me, their company is rewarding on its own!

I'm with you my poultry are my pets eggs are just a bonus. They really do make us laugh and I enjoy their company.

Not only do ducks earn their keep, feed is much cheaper. 3 weeks of duck pellets for 8 ducks cost about half what three dogs eat in that time.

Curious, at what age did henopause occur?

For my one Muscovy she was around 9 yrs.She’s 14 now. My youngest Muscovy just turned 10 and she hasn't laid yet this season I'd say she is done but she still gets in the nest box every morning. I have another 2 that will be 11 in June and they both have laid this year. So I guess it depends on the duck. Every year my Runners and Buffs start later in spring all but 2 are 6 the 2 youngest just turned 3. so no telling when these girls will go through henopause.

Not only do ducks earn their keep, feed is much cheaper. 3 weeks of duck pellets for 8 ducks cost about half what three dogs eat in that time.

I just dont consider it "earning" their keep! My girls will always have a home regardless of what they give us or how they behave! But they are rewarding to keep! And good point about feed! Also our dogs are all insured, routine vet care, maintenance for nails/washing/brushing, and a LOT on food. Ducks are cheaper once the original set up is taken care of, in my opinion!

Haha, I was saying yesterday that my youngest Muscovy who just turned 10 wasn't laying. Well, she was back in the nest box this morning and laid her egg while I was cleaning the coop. I guess she showed me.

Dougie laid a larger egg today, Just a tiny bit larger than a chicken egg, I figured she was getting them a little bigger now- It was a double yolker!
