In the Brooder
A friend of mine recently purchased some property with two pigeon coops on it that he wanted to get rid of. We made it over there yesterday and I was able to pick one of them up (the other was too large to move and will require a permit to transport... you can see it in the background to the right of the picture). I was hoping to get it fixed up in time for our birds to start laying. We think they are about 14 weeks now, and I'm just not going to have time. So the plan now is to add on to my existing Kerr Chicken Tractor, making it a permanent coop and adding a small run. That will buy us some time to work on this one and get it right.
It's hard to tell from the picture, but this thing is steel framed. You can see the light rusting around the corners. I *think* the floor system and joists are in good shape, but aside from that most of the wood seems to be rotten. It probably would have lasted for a few more years in it's former position, but it was a tough two hour ride home and the rotting wood really suffered. It's going to need a complete tear down and re-build. I'm going to do my best to keep as much of the original "frame" as possible, where practical. It is roughly 10 feet wide by 8 feet deep... more than enough room for our nine birds, and hopefully a handful more down the road.
I'll try my best to document the progress in this thread (for both coops). The plan is to fully enclose the new coop (with ventilation, of course) and add a large exterior run.If you have any suggestions I'd be glad to hear them.
