new to quail, sand question

Please don't! Get them plain old construction sand or dirt from your garden. Play sand tends to clump and can cause crop issues.

Or can I get anything else besides sand for they could use ?

Construction sand is cheap and easy to get. If you want, you could use peat moss instead. Dirt or sand baths help keep the quail clean.

You can get construction sand for around $5 or $6 for a 50# bag at Lowes. Just make sure you're not getting something with a premix of concrete or something like that.

The sand tubes are very good! Also the cheapest. Fine to small stones in it and very dry.

The construction sand is too coarse for mine. Not sure if it's quarried differently in different places, but ours is like a coarse sandpaper grit and made of coral.

I use play sand. The one here is dirtier than the one I used to get in California for the kids so I have to prewash it or end up with birds dirtier than if they bathed in the soil.

Also, for the coop run I use deep bedding so they also bathe in the bedding which is made of poultry bedding (shavings you can buy at the feed store), chopped up dried leaves and grass cuttings. That stuff is compost gold!!

Saw this, thought YAY sounds good, then thought -- but it must cost 3x as much here in Hawaii.

I was wrong -- they don't even carry it here. WAAH

Just use dry dirt from the yard. They will love it. Better yet do this: take the dirt from one of your moms favorite plants. When she ask what happened tell her you were to busy to take me to the store
