Hi, we're new to raising chickens. We have 5 that are about 2.5 months old. 2 Rhode Island Reds, 2 Barred Rocks, and 1 Silver Laced. They are all doing great and are very well acclimated to us, our children and even the cats. =)
My question is...
I went out to check on their food and give them fresh water tonight, and noticed that one of our Rhode Island Reds has a broken toe. It must have happened yesterday or today while I was at work. It is the inner-most toe on it's left foot. And is most definitely broken. It does not seem to be bothering her. It is not swollen, bleeding, or abraded in any way. I wasn't sure if I should try to splint it, and see if it would heal straight, or if I should take her to the vet to have it amputated. Does anyone have any experience with this?

could you put up a picture?
it could be an incubator fault if s/he was born/ hatched that way. unless it bothers him/ her then it should be fine. if it gets infected or changes colour then a trip to the vet would be in order

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! You might like to post on the Emergencies forum https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/10/emergencies-diseases-injuries-and-cures about it... X2 pictures might help with getting advice about splinting or amputating it etc. It is odd that it does not seem to be bothering her and nothing going on with it at all if it just happened, some birds do have curly toes etc that get worse as they get older, could it be something like that?

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

How is the bird today? Definitely get some pics of the toe and post them in our emergency section for more help.

I hope your bird is going to be ok. Welcome to our flock!
