new to raising chickens!

I finally convinced my husband to say yes to raising chickens. I can't tell you how many times I've seen an animal and said oh! Wouldn't it be fun to have those!? And he looks at me crazy and says no. (we'd have a zoo or it were up to me) but one day he actually said yes to the idea of chickens so I ran out and got some before he changed his mind! I took our 3 kids with me and of course they wanted the really tiny babies instead of the ones that were ready to be outside. So here I am with 2 weeks old chicks. (i brought them home at 2 days old.) we are learning so much and getting ready to build our coop. I think it's going to be so amazing to have fresh, organic eggs for my family. Any advice is more than welcome!

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join our flock. Raising chickens is a wonderful experience for children. My granddaughter (pictured in my avatar) loves our chickens. Definitely check out our Learning Center at https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center. There is loads of useful information there that will keep you from making beginners' mistakes. I actually have no idea what breed they are. I know one is an Americana based on research I've done on my own. I just picked them up at a local feed place. I think next time I get babies I'll get specific breeds. But for now it's all about learning to raise them and teaching the kids about healthy living and sustainability.

Actually if you got it at a feed store it's probably an Easter Egger, not an Ameraucana :) Real Ameraucanas you can usually only find from breeders. If you wanted to post some pictures of them in the "What Breed or Gender" forum we could help you tell what breeds you have.
