Hello everyone, my name is Murphy,

I guess I can be considered new to owning chickens now? My Brothers and I took care of about 250 Bantam chickens for many years while growing up. That was over 40 years ago now. I look back on those years with great joy. My Wife and I have a 5 year old Daughter and I would like for her to experience the same great joy of having pet chickens. There is no way I can take care of 250+ chickens at this time, but I am planning on getting about 3 to 5 chicks to start. I can always add to the flock as the time goes on.

As Spring quickly approaches I am still way behind schedule (my self-imposed schedule) of preparing for the new additions to our Family. I still have yet to build a coop or even decide where in the yard it will go. We live in a cul-de-sac in an Urban area with a very large back yard. A small flock is permitted as long as there are no noise complaints from neighbors. Which I do not foresee any problems.

I would like to build the coop myself with the help of my Daughter. She loves to help me around the house with small projects. She and I both get great satisfaction from building small things. I have enlisted the help of my best friend of 40 years to assist in the heavy work. I am partially disabled and it would be impossible for me to complete this size project on my own.

As for breeds, I am leaning towards a pair of Bantam Buff Cochins. We had a pair while growing up and the hen was always setting on a nest of eggs. She raised many chicks over the years. She was the only setting hen we had. I would also like the rest of the flock to be gentle so my Daughter can make pets of them. She is very good with animals. She has a 100 pound German Shepard that follows her around. She reads him stories and even dresses him up for tea parties.

Wow, and I thought I was going to have trouble finding anything to write about? I am looking forward to digging into this Forum and getting some great ideas and advice for our flock.

Hi Murphy and welcome to BYC. I wish you the best of luck with your chicken-keeping revival.

This is a useful link of BYC guides to take a look at announcements-feedback-issues-guides.3 I’d suggest including your location using the guide in the link. You can use this link to contact members in your area - Find your State's thread.

Best wishes

Three to five chickens is a bit more manageable on a cul-de-sac sized property!
Having your daughter help you is terrific! What a nice experience for your whole family.
