Hello everyone, my name is Ryan. I am new to chickens, just purchase four of them. Hoping to learn a lot about them in this group. I have black Australorps, heard they are hardy chickens and do good in the winter. I am from Northern Illinois so we get some cold winters. That is the thing I am most nervous about is making sure they are safe in the winter and taken care of correctly. Purchased a coop from a local store, got it built and made some improvement to it so its a bit more sturdy and weather ready. Any tips would be appreciated, specially when it come to prepping for winter.

Hello, Ryan, and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
I hate to be the bearer of bad news but that coop isn't going to come anywhere near close to being big enough for 4 LF chickens.

Why is that? Its says 6, but done a lot of research online and I see lots of people that do 4. I am building a run for it too. So they will lots of room to run the yard.

LF chickens need 4 sq ft per bird in the coop.
I'm sure the packaging did say it would hold 6. You CAN stuff 6 birds in there. That doesn't make it big enough to avoid behavioral, health and sanitation issues.

Well its what im starting with.... If next spring I feel I need something bigger I can build another level to it and go from there. Lots of people using this size and style, I have read lots of reviews and seen many u tube videos on them. I live in the city so unfortunately I am not able to go to a walk in type coop.
