New to the group

Hi there! I've had several breeds of chickens for the past 4 years. Really love my Buff Rocks. Gentle disposition and good egg layers. In need of more chickens and I am looking at the Buff Orpington's. I want and excellent layers with good dispositions and meat yield. I would also like a rooster with a good disposition. I had to get rid of my last rooster. He got pretty mean and I just don't have the temperament to put up with mean critters. I want to be safe and comfortable around my animals and the safety of my animal sitters is paramount also.
I'm open to suggestions for other chicken breeds that fit my requirements if you have any.

Welcome to Backyard chickens. I have never had them but, am told Black Australorps (bred down from orpingtons) are very good layers, very hardy and a dual purpose breed.

Welcome to BYC! Glad you joined the flock! As Drumstick Diva said Black Australorps are an amazing breed and descendants of Orpingtons. I own 25 of them. I would say out of the 13 years I've raised chickens Black Australorp is my favorite. They are very docile, including the roosters. My Black Australorp roosters have been some of the calmest and friendliest. Roosters get really big and hens lay very well. You can make some good meat birds out of the hens when they finish laying. If you're looking for some Orpingtons or any other breed type your state in the search bar below the home page button. Or look in the buy, sell, trade area.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. Buff Orpingtons are a good choice as they are calm and gentle and good layers of brown eggs. Other breeds that are good layers and have a well deserved reputation for being calm and gentle include Australorps (excellent layers), Faverolles, Sussex, and Brahmas.
