I just adopted a baby chick who was the runt of the litter and was going to be "taken out back". It's moving around a lot more but it won't open its eyes today even though they were fine yesterday. I'm excited to have my first chick - I'm just hoping it makes it.

Welcome to BYC!

Sorry about your little chick. You might try keeping separated and under a bit of extra heat. 97 or 98 degrees. Put 2 tablespoons of sugar in his water as sometimes they need a blood sugar boost. Offer him up some chopped hard boiled eggs. Eggs are great emergency food for babies and can really help jump start them.

If these things don't help the little one out, you might post this question in our Raising Chicks forums for more help....

Good luck with your little chick. I hope he makes it thru. :)

Good luck with your poultry raising adventures, and I hope you find everything you need to know. Don't forget to take a look at BYC's very useful learning center (If you haven't already)! The learning center as well as the forum should answer your questions! There is always something new to learn! Glad to have you here! See you around with the flock.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Good luck with the little guy, TwoCrows gave you some good advice, hope the chick makes it.

No redness or discharge. He/she is starting to open them now but still runs around with them closed a lot.

Glad you joined us! Good luck with the little one. When it feels a bit better it you should get it a chick friend to keep it
company. Chickens are very social creatures who prefer to hang out in groups or at least pairs.
