My husband and I have had our chickens for about 8 months. We have more than we planned. He wanted to get 12, but then read that 2-3 could die during shipping so he added 3 more to the order. Then when we got them, we found they had added three more to "guarentee the shipping"! So we started wtih 18. One peep died the day we discovered she was blind and another died not much later. We ended up with 16! A much larger flock than we wanted. We really like having them. But we are new to this for sure. I have learned a lot from this website and enjoy the posts and pictures! We have 6 Buff Orpington, 6 Barred Rocks and 4 Black Australorps. I do have a question...How do we know for sure a hen is laying? Actually two questions....The most eggs we have gotten in a day is 12. That was before the days shortened for winter. Now we are getting 7-10 a day...
