This chicken as a pet thing is new. I grew up on a farm in WI and had 100-300 at any given time. Ive always loved them, but they had a job like the rest of us. Now I happen to have rescued 6 all different ages and from different places. Ive gotten attached t all of them but hold one closer to my heart, we are pretty much in each others shadow all day. i dont leave anywhere without her. Ive heard of these diapers and they look uncomfortable and chickens seem to not like them. help? and any other info you volunteer is appreciaed! thanks Star

Hello and welcome to BYC - thanks for joining us. If you use the search function and type "house chickens" or "indoor chickens" you may find the information that you are looking for.

Best wishes

It is so wonderful to see someone show so much care and compassion!
I would think it would be harder to clean the chicken's bottom after diaper removal than carrying around a small pack of wet wipes with you for the floor.
Chicks poo so much and often. Excrement will get smeared onto their bums and how do you clean it without stressing out the hen?
Only sounds like more work/added stress and perhaps an introduction to hygiene/heath risks..
I am only outside looking in although.
Interesting topic never the less!
I wish you the best on whatever you decide..:)

Hello there and welcome to BYC! :frow

I have found that it takes birds a while to get used to wearing clothing like crop bras, peepers, saddle protectors, sweaters and diapers. Its not natural for them to wear anything. But over time they will get used to them. Some birds are instantly ok with them, others need time. Always start out with loose settings and tighten over time.

There are members here that sell diapers, look in our Buy Sell and Trade section. On line, hensaver.com sells all manner of clothing. I think mypetchicken.com sells diapers.

Good luck with all your babies and welcome to our roost! :)

Welcome to byc I think you will really like it here we are so glad to have you! I have learned more on this site that any other sites I have ever been to! Please start a conversation with me or write a message on my profile if you need any help I would be glad to help!

Check out "people with housechickens." My friend has over 25+ years of house chickens, experiences, mostly silkies but, others as well. She would not fuss with diapers when she keeps rags handy, cleaning products, etc. and cleans up as each mess appears. Her house does NOT have an unpleasant odor. Currently she has 2 matronly seramas and one silkie hen.

Diapers are expensive and very time consuming to work with. As soon as you clean one up, chickens will poo again and again. That's what chickens do.
