I would lose those grates and just cover with hardware cloth. If you still have the pieces you cut out of the wall, you can hinge them onto the coop wall and partially or fully close some of them in the winter of you have a bad storm.

I thought about that but if we are gone and a good storm hits they will keep the rain/snow from comming in and I will have a nice sized window for when they need lots of air. I was thinking of putting a 12x24 sliding window in from that trailer house that I used the roof joists from for on the run. Other than that they seem really happy and come running when we go out everyday, well my first 6 anyway lol. The black ones are still really scared of pretty much anything that moves lol.
