New to the thought of butchering

I have heard of making an incision in the neck and bleeding it out that way, but that seems like a suffering way to die. I think its easier to just chop it off and end it. No pain, no suffering and they get to go to Chicken Heaven quicker.

Just go to a processor. It's cheap. They're better at it than you. And they dispatch the chickens very quickly, having had more experience doing it. I want my brids to suffer as little as possible at the end.

Yeah, I agree. As soon as I can get a hold of some, I will. I am also going to contact that butcher and see if they will process mine for a reasonable price. Ah, the joys of living off the land. If I keep this up, I won't have to buy much at the store anymore.

It's a 4.5 hour roundtrip to my processor. I just have to factor that into the chicken pricing... $3.50 per pound last year, which I will have to pad now due to the chicken feed price going up 25% and gasoline not getting any cheaper.

I tried it both ways on the ones I butchered yesterday. The bird seemed to struggle more and take longer to die when I just cut jugular as apposed to cutting the head off.

I guess there are perks to living in the city in that aspect. The processor is only a 5 min drive down the road. I stumbled upon it by coincidence driving around to my mum's house.

However, I guess at some point its better to do this yourself. For now, I am just going to try out my first batch and see how that works out.
