Hello! I’m Becky and I live in North Central MA. I have a horse farm. One horse, four dogs and now two Rhode Island Red Pullets and four ISA Browns. We also ordered ten Plymouth Barred Rock. Those are coming in any day now.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? Yes, my family and I are new to chickens! My 10-year-old has been begging for them for maybe 4 years now. We have a stall we can convert into their hen house. Right now they are a few days old.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now? Right now we have six. 2 Rhode Island Reds and 4 ISA Browns. All Pullets.
(3) What breeds do you have? Stated above.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? We have had them for 3 days, and I love watching their personalities. We have 1 Boss chick out of the whole order. We named her Athena. For the Greek Goddess of War. She gets into everyone’s food, she jumps on everyone. She pecks at everyone. I love holding them and having them fall asleep in my hand. I don’t know why I didn’t get them sooner!
(5) What are some of your other hobbies? Riding horses. Photography. Training horses. Instructor. Grooming my dogs, rescuing animals. Dancing, yoga, reading.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. I have two girls. Ages 10 and 16. My 10-year-old loves horses and takes lessons. She loves animals. My older daughter loves writing, the guitar, singing and the chicks, now! We have a eight-year-old stallion pony that we just got from a friend. He came from slaughter and had a bad infection. He had to have an extensive surgery and stay in the hospital for almost a week. No one ever addressed his health issues, but me! I made him a promise I would keep him forever! I don’t want him getting I. The wrong hands ever again. So many people helped donate to his surgery! He gets gelded very soon! We also have a Golden Retriever, an Australien Shepard and a Chihuahua and a cat. And the 6 new chicks. Right now, I care for my horse and my kids.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
Ive known about BYC for many years. A lot of people have horses too, and I was noticing a lot of horse related stuff there. I joined the FB group years ago!
