New to the world of raising my own chickens

Hi all,

My family and I have recently moved from city life in the south to the inland northwest and my son and I are excited to start raising chickens and begin a garden. I know I have LOTS to learn so I will be pouring over the articles in here for tips. Wish us luck!

You must need to know first that those prefab coops you can order online..... they grossly inflate the numbers in how many chickens can fit in there! It's usually only good for half of that, so if you plan on having a nice size flock of about 8 or more, I'd suggest looking into building your own coop/run. Anyway, there are tons and tons of info on this site so I'm sure you'll learn the ins and outs soon enough. And ask away, people in here like to help out.

Chicks grow real quick, please do yourself a favor and build an appropriate size coop before you get them. If you can't or don't want to build something, purchase a shed and convert it to a coop. Walk in coops are so much easier to take care of. I'd also recommend reading about the mama heat pad, instead of using a heat lamp for chicks. Please don't be afraid to ask questions. If you add your general location to your profile, it will help us help you better if you have a question that would be related to your climate.
