Hi I'm Carriegator and just signed in for the 1st time! We have had chickens since April of 2016 so we are in our 2nd Summer.
My main concerns are keeping my flock healthy during this heatwave

Welcome to BYC!

It is hot out. A nice thing to do for them is to put some corn/Mealworms/sunflower seeds in bottled water and freeze it. Once you peel the bottle off, the chickens can peck at it for a cool treat!

They also love watermelon. You can fill shallow pans with water, so the chickens can stand in them. Cool feet = cool bird.

Welcome to BYC from Middle Tennessee:welcome I do all of the above to keep them cool and add that they have shade trees in their pasture.

Welcome aboard! :frow
We are glad you joined our flock.

Definitely watermelon! My chickens adore it! And sometimes if it's really hot I take the hose and mist them. If you want to know if they are too hot, they look like this but with an open mouth.

Yogurt also helps too! They take dust baths because the dust helps cool them. If chicks are too hot they will lounge and look... Dead? They will go on their side and rest with their feet sticking out!

Hope this helps!

Thank you! Yes, I gave them watermelon and they loved it, it's cooler today so they are enjoying their treat in the run.
