I am very interested in starting up a very small, 2 to 3 hen chicken family for my girls and I to raise and enjoy fresh eggs. We need guidance from the hen house, protection from predators, how and where to purchase the right hens and if course we want them to be free range. We live in western Ky so anyone who can help is out please do. We are ready to learn

Hi and welcome to BYC - glad to have you onboard with us. Firstly, i would suggest getting at least 3 chickens, so if one dies, the remaining two will have company (they are flock animals and need the company of other birds).

The Coop section and "Coops and Runs" forum will give you plenty of inspiration for your coop build, and the "Predators and Pests" forum likewise.

You may wish to consider joining your state thread as it will put you in touch with other BYC members in your area so you can discover what your BYC neighbours have done with their coops etc - https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/270925/find-your-states-thread

Good luck
