New to this- Is this a sound a young hen would make?

sounds like the egg song to me but she looks alot older than what you are saying looks more like she is around 5 or 6 months old

My girls started making that noise at about 21 weeks old. Two of the three, the Buff Orpington and the Barred Rock, were especially noisy in the week before they started laying.

He has some really thick legs too.

That sound is called a cackle. It means he is upset about something or scared. All chickens make the sound. Hens also cackle after they've laid an egg.
