Why are so many people here talking about killing predators and doves (who aren't predators, just eating feed) and culling chicks??????
One of my friends showed me a couple of threads he was interested in, and they looked good, so I signed up.

OMG!

I hope this isn't typical!!!!!!!

I have six hens, one rooster, and one cockerel, all Buff Laced Polish. I don't want any advice that tells me to kill chickens FOR NO GOOD REASON!!!!!

Welcome to BYC!
The dove thread is a separate case, and I agree that it's awful.
Killing predators is common, especially in rural areas.
Culling chicks, roosters, and sick birds is a part of most people's farms and flocks. If you don't like to read about that, don't click those threads. Most advice doesn't involve killing things, don't worry.

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
You'll primarily find the 'kill the predator' replies in the Predator and Pest Forum. I don't believe in that. It's our job to provide our birds with properly designed enclosures to keep them safe. Predators have to eat too.
Sometimes chicks and chickens need to be euthanized when the likelihood of quality of life is little to none. That's a fundamental responsibility of all animal care takers, to prevent suffering.

Most people here are very respectful of others and their beliefs and sensibilities. There are always people, on any online site who say things for shock value. Others have different ideas.
Most here do not kill without reason. I believe that the majority of people on this site respect life.
Tolerance and knowing when to scroll on is the best way to handle conflicting beliefs.

Welcome to BYC! So glad you decided to join us!

x2 Everything DobieLover just said.

Welcome to BYC! I'm sorry to hear that you were offended by that post. Unfortunately with so many people, you're going to hear about all kinds of different ways of handling things. There are many here that are more soft hearted (myself included) and just like with everything in life, we just have to learn to "take what we need and leave what we don't". Of course I mean that about the advice, suggestions, ways of living and knowledge. I truly feel grateful to be part of this site because there are some absolutely amazing folks here that offer up their time to help us grow as chicken keepers and oftentimes help our birds in a crisis. I have AT LEAST two birds that without a doubt, would not be alive if it wasn't for some members here that spent so much time helping me help my bird, for absolutely nothing in return. Everything won't be perfect for everyone anyone where you go but of all places I've searched for help with my birds, the members here stand out above the rest in terms of knowledge, commitment, eagerness to help and support. I encourage you to stick around and give this site more of a chance. I'm sorry that post got to you. I promise you that the members here are so much more than I can describe. I hope you'll see for yourself

Welcome to the BYC forum. We are so Egg-cited you joined. You will find invaluable learning information and experience interactive subjects. Look around and Learn all you can. Unfortunately, personal experiences shared or responses that are not evidence based can't be filtered out. We have peeps from all over the world and many age variances asking questions and learning. I found if someone is responding in a negative or harsh manner that differs from my personal ideals, I block them. Life and Life with Chickens can be challenging at times, without having negativity enter via my eyes. Therefore, I block them.
On a positive note! The BYC forum is happy you joined.
Don't forget to consider purchasing a gorgeous calendar or other items from our store.
Ps: I (we/BYC) would love to see Flock pictures!
