New to this site and horrified by the killer comments!

First and foremost, please realize that BYC people care about their poultry or they wouldn't be here. This group has saved the lives of some of my birds and has saved my sanity more than once.

There are definitely people here who have beliefs that are much different than mine. And, sometimes I know that when I see the name of the thread they're posting, but I read it anyway because it might help me understand them and their circumstance better.

I've been criticized for relocating opossums instead of killing them, but I don't want to kill something wild that is just looking for an easy meal. I feel like I'm living in their world, so I need to protect my birds from predators.

On the other hand, I will admit that I fully intended to use a 3-tined cultivator to kill the mink that sneaked into a coop and killed three of my chickens for sport, not consumption. I have since made that coop more resistant to attack. Hardware cloth is a necessary expense here.

Please stick with this group and benefit from the knowledge it offers. You will find plenty of people here who think like you do.
 
So, do you think meat just magically appears in your grocery store on those pink squares?

There are plenty of good reasons to have to kill an animal, I doubt you are going to find many, if any at all here saying kill something for the sake of killing it. No matter what your beliefs are, for something to live, something else has to die. Even plants matter.

Do you have children? If an animal were to attack your children, would you kill it, if necessary to protect your children, or just let them shred your daughter because well, that's just the 'nice' thing to do? There are also some people who look at their animals as if they WERE their children. Yet others who think those who do that, are crazy. Personally I am on the fence on that one. I know what Id do to anything that threatened my bird. When we have animals, and have them caged up, WE become their protectors, and are expected to do the right thing by them, and sadly, eventually, when they become ill, injured, have to put them down so they are not needlessly suffering. Animals don't think like people do, and when they become a problem, you can't talk sense into them and they go aww shucks, gee whillachers, im so soddy, I go way now and leave, it'd be nice but don't work that way, which means that yes, unfortunately sometimes you DO have to kill something to protect your animals. Why would you think it's ok to let your chicken die, but not the thing attacking it?
