New here coup is under construction will get a few hens after that I've asked for them for my bday next month. I'd like to have a few hens for eggs [full sized ones] maybe some turkeys [three] as we are in town and not room for any more than that. Not sure if they would be ready for turkey day or Christmas for dinner.

I thought the grand kids would enjoy seeing chickens and collecting eggs.I'd like to get the one that lays green eggs, buff o,, a barred rock, red one RI or NH. Four to start with not sure yet.

We used to have Rhode Island reds & ones that lay green eggs when I was a kid.

Learned about this site from fb.

I like to do yarn crafts like knitting and crocheting and gardening.

We live on the Id. border near Lewiston.

I have a few questions:
Can chickens eat english or light shelled walnuts cracked open?

How long does it take to feed out turkeys?
How much does a turkey weight what works good for a good turkey roost?

What are heritage breeds?

Do you do any record keeping if so what if you don't mind sharing.

Hi and :welcome

We feed our chickens all sorts of nuts, I reckon walnuts would be okay.
I know nothing about turkeys personally, you should post your questions in the Turkeys section (it's a bit further down from this one). You'll probably get more replies there!

I hope you find all the info you need here, and enjoy the site. :D

Thanks for the welcomes!

My 3 yo grand daughter asked me why I was getting chickens ~ it made me really stop and think; I said well you are going
to be in school in a couple of years and I want them to help eat the bugs and it would be fun to get the eggs with you
and we could put them in the play house when you are older.

We had chickens when I was a kid, and I remember helping my grandmother feed her chickens from a coffee can it was fun to do. We helped husk the field corn and take it off the cobs. Hubby her grandpa had chickens when he was a kid too, said chickens would eat corn right off the cob.

We used to raise rabbits

and our kids got champion ribbons in fitting and showing in 4-H when they were kids.

I remember dad made a home made feeder for the flock out of plywood and 2x4"s it looked like a giant rabbit feeder and
held 2 #50 sacks of chicken feed.

was always getting out and visiting from a half mi. way I would help catch it and return it to the owner
I earned a box of candy for that when I was in high school one time.
I just cornered him and caught him. They had brought a homemade leg hook to use.
