New to this what type of bird?!?

Me and my husband have decided we want to raise our own chickens for laying eggs as well as meat! Tired of all the fillers and recalls. Want something healthier for my family!
We live in Nova Scotia Canada! We plan on buying a chicken coup! Still a bit of snow down so we are waiting for it to melt some.
What types of birds do you all suggest? And any other tips or information would be great! :)

Being in Canada you'll probably want a breed that's cold hardy. You may want to avoid things with very large single combs such as leghorns as they are more prone to frostbite. Do you have a preferred egg color? Wyandottes are usually a good choice for beginners, and they come in several pretty colors and have small combs, so are less prone to frostbite issues. They might be a good choice for you. Brahmas are also really nice and are an excellent dual purpose breed. The roosters are huge and good for meat, they have pea combs so less chance of frostbite, and they do well in the cold.

If you are wanting chickens for meat and eggs who can handle the cold then I would recommend most dual purpose breeds. So buff orpingtons, black australorps, rhode island reds, barred rocks, wyandottes and easter eggers.
