Newbie in Georgia. I have wanted chickens for a while and decided to take the plunge. I bought 10 chicks a week ago and I am learning as I go trying to read as much info as possible. I had 2 ISA Brown, 1 Asian Black, 2 Black Sex Link, 2 Golden Comet, 2 Rhode Island Reds, 1 Lavendar Oprington. I have lost 1 chick so far and don't know why. She was fine the day before but found her early in the morning. Don't know if it was one of the ISA Browns or a Golden Comet. Only issue I have had so far other than that is pasty butt on 1 chick. Added a little apple cider vinegar to their water and no more issues. Started on my coop and run this past weekend. Hopefully have it complete in a week. I am sure I will be spending a lot of time on here reading and seeking advice. Thanks to all in advance!

Here is the progress on mine so far. Hopefully get the window installed above the nesting box and finish out the nesting box today. Get the rest of the siding on tomorrow then start building the run. Roof will be last since it will cover the coop and the run.

Welcome !! I'm in Georgia, also. I have 2 laying hens and 5 chicks 5weeks old. Looks like you're off to a great start. Im new at th his, also.

Welcome both of you! I have noticed over the years, that many people on this site, get their birds, before they build the coop and run for them. I see you are building a nice one. you may need it bigger though.

Coop is 4x8 which is 32 sq ft /9 chickens is 3.5sq ft per chicken and the run is 8x10 but will also extend under the coop. So a total on 8x14 for the run which is 112 sq ft /9 chickens is 12.5 sq ft per chicken. Everything I read says 2 to 3 sq ft per chicken inside the coop and 8 to 10 sq ft per chicken in the run. I don't plan on having more than 10 so I should still be within those numbers. I can't really build any bigger as the space doesn't allow. My intentions were to have 6 to 8 birds. I had bought 6 but wanted 2 Rhode Island Reds but when I went to buy them I had to buy 4 so that is how I ended up with 10. LOL. Again I am new and just going off research for how big to build.

My new dear friend, there is a term we use. It's called chicken math. It's real, and there is no way around it! I'm just saying that crowded birds will be unhappy ones. Trust me, I did everything wrong at first!

Well well welcome from Georgia. Another Georgian we get some more we can take over the coop..

Glad you found this site. :welcome

There is a lot of good info on here, and a some great people, that will help basically day and night.
