Yeah there are some people on here who raise in Alaska and N Canada who have seen some harsh ones, but I agree with everyone else. As long as you have a draft free coop (this doesn't mean airtight, mind you) and plenty of food and defrosted water you will be okay. Chickens are pretty low maintenance once you get them going. There are tons of threads in the learning center about what to feed and about housing and breeds and everything. Folks on here are pretty good about responding quickly if you have questions.....So WELCOME! From Boise, ID!I live in Northwest Alaska, about 100 miles south of the arctic circle. I have a small 8x6 insulated coop that I hope will give them enough protection. I'm not sure of the breed. They look like Plymouths but they have grey and pinkish feet. Maybe a cross between a Plymouth and Maran? They lay very brown eggs although not as brown as I'd expect if they were Marans.
