How long after my hen lays eggs does it take her to sit on them

As broodiness has been bred out of some breeds and because some hens never go broody even though they lay eggs, they may never sit on them.

The usual process when a hen is going broody is for the hen to lay one egg a day for 7-10 days and then she sits on them. The eggs do not start to develop until she sits on them, thus guaranteeing that they all hatch around the same time.

If a hen is prone to going broody, even if you take the eggs away she will still go broody, it is a hormonal thing. I have had broodies sit on a nest with nothing in it for weeks.

If a hen is not broody, you could leave 10 eggs in the nest and she would still not sit on them.
