I have Welsummers but recently added some Wyandotte to my flock from someone who was moving away.
She bought them from Cackle as Red Splash Wyandotte but they are very different looking from each other. Is this a natural color difference that happens between birds of this breed or is one actually another strain? Thanks for the help!

"Lula" - bright white lace & feathers, rose comb
"Bluebell" - blue/gray lace, flat comb

They're blue laced red Wyandottes.
As with most "blue" varieties from hatcheries you can get the black, blue or splash versions
Pics are small on my phone but looks/sounds like your darker one is blue laced red. The lighter one is a splash laced red. The darker one may be a darker splash laced red.
The correct comb would be the flat one. Rose Comb. The other has a single comb. That's very common in Wyandottes because breeders and hatcheries think they're needed to combat fertility issues linked with rose comb birds.

I wish I could help, but I'm interested as well to see what response you get, I have ordered 3 speckled wyandottes from Cackle also. They aren't due to arrive until first week of May. Your girls a beautiful, I'm excited to see mine.

This is great info, thanks!
regarding the comb: I have read that rose is the “correct“ comb for this breed but are you saying that straight combs aren’t purposely avoided by breeders? I am interested in more info if anyone has a link!

That's correct.
I don't a link but I'm sure more info wouldn't be hard to find. But yes there's a fertility issue linked with the rose comb so not only have some breeders not bred away from single combs they have purposely kept them in their breeding programs.
Rose is dominant to single so the single combs and their gene can stay hidden. Of course by doing so they always continue to pop up. That's why so many hatchery Wyandottes have them.
I don't get it myself. I raised rose comb leghorns and the fertility issues weren't that bad. I'd rather end up hatching fewer correct chicks then hatch the normal amount and have some with an obvious fault and have the gene all over in my breeding group.

First one looks like a splash, the second could be a darker splash or a blue. We have two blues that are slightly different in shade of lacing and shade of interior color.

The single comb has me worried though. Our first Wyandottes were from Privett via a local feed store. We've got six on order from Cackle shipping tomorrow and I don't really want hidden single comb genetics.

I didnt think cackle had single combed wyandottes good to know...wont ever buy from there as they arent pure as comb type has nothing to do with fertility imo.

Hello fellow Wyandotte lovers!
Your Wyandottes are beautiful!

I have a few, and hatched 4 eggs, no fertility issues.

My 4 original Wyandottes I got in 2017, are the 1 SL Roo with his 3 hens, 1 BL, 2 Ivory with RL gene.

The 2 pair of colorful SBLR are the 4 eggs hatched from my originals. This was my 1st time hatching chicks & it was so cool!!!
I ❤️ baby chicks & am amazed by the beautiful colors the feathers are. Just love my handsome Roos! They're quite sweet personality wise, too.

I wish I knew more about the genetic background of my originals.
It's interesting to learn & I'm really a newbie at it.
Can you tell me if I am using correct terminology for mine? I'm not sure if any are splash, but I'm familiar with the Silver Lace & Blue Lace Red. (Hope you don't mind me popping in here...just love the Wyandottes & like to learn more)

Thanks!
