New urban chicken raisers - Edmond, OK

Glad you joined us!

Update: After a rough start, things are going well now. Couldn't locate any egg laying hens within a 20 minute drive from our house, so we bit the bullet and went back to the swap meet and bought from a different vendor.

We now have three egg laying hens (all started laying after about 2-weeks). We also bought two little white Silkies. Told not to count on eggs from them but they are fun to have around - and we agree!

Our neighbor bought about 15 Guinea Fowl that roam free and they come over and visit our hens a few times a day. We are getting 2-3 eggs per day and loving it. Will probably add two more egg layers this weekend.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions!

Hello, My wife and I are new to the whole 'urban chicken' experience. However, we recently moved to an acreage and decided to give it a try as a hobby and something enjoyable for our youngest relatives when they come to visit.

We bought a coop from our local Sam's Club ($300 and claims to be good for up to 6 hens).

We just want to start with 3 hens and see how it goes.

Unfortunately it hasn't started off too well. We didn't know where to buy adult egg laying hens so we went to a place called Mary's Swap Meet. We bought 3 hens on Saturday morning (claimed to be 9 months old). On Saturday one was found dead and this morning another was dead.

Not sure how common this is with chickens dying from stress of relocation or if they were diseased when we got them. Can't imagine we did anything to kill them - provide a coop in a protected area, provided a waterer and scratch.

Hoping to get some good advice here.

I know this really sucks but how is the last girl doing ????????

Haven't updated in some time and thought I'd share our latest project....

We recently build a raised bed garden on our property (about 2.5 acres in Edmond, near East 15th and I-35). I decided I'd have to fence it in because of the rabbits, deer and our's and our neighbors free range chickens. We also have Guinea fowl, but they don't pay any attention to the garden.

While putting the fencing up I decided to try a chicken tunnel/run. I moved one of our Sam's Club purchased chicken coops next to the garden fence and began constructing a run. There are some photos below. Top photo is the run almost matched up with the coop entrance. The bottom photo is the fenced garden and coop (no run at that point).

I'm hoping to have it finished over the Labor Day weekend and then add some hens and see what they think.

Anyone else here have a Chicken Tunnel/Run and have any advice. I'm just sort of winging it as I go.

Your whole set up looks great! That looks like a nice coop for $300. Have you been happy with it?

Thanks. Its still a work in progress. That's our second Sam's Club coop. The first one looks identical but is a dark brown stain. We have it in a slightly wooded area for our free range hens.

The one in the pic we bought at Sam's when they were clearing them out for $100 each! Its only a few months old. Our older one is a couple of years old and is holding up very well.

You have to put them together and the wood is cheap in quality. But I used wood glue when assembling it (with their provided screws), reinforced some areas with mending plates and wood, weather treated the entire coop and added a dark colored caulking to some areas. Should last several years.
