Ok, I need something that isn't such a pain in the butt to refill. I have been trying to think of something I could make but I havn't come up with much. I hate those red and white waterers that are like three gallons and you have to flip them over ti fill, then back over onto the base. I wind up losing half of the water I add to it. Any suggestions on something with several gallons of water but easy to refill?

Here's a page with many waters and feeders from the last byc feeder/waterer contest. Many have detailed instructions on how to make them: https://www.backyardchickens.com/chicken-coop-water-feeder.html

If you have a hose that reaches your watering area, I'd highly recommend a 5 gallon bucket with two poultry watering nipples inserted on the bottom and the whole apparatus situated on a concrete block. It's very easy to make and maintain. You can get inexpensive nipples here: http://www.qcsupply.com/420011-push-in-style-nipple.html Good luck!

Miller Manufacturing makes a nice waterer ( "Little Giant") in a 3 gal and I think 5 gal size which fills from the top, is much sturdier with a deeper tray, than the ones you refer to. I have one like yours also, though mine has a heated base: I hate to use it for the reasons you mention. I have two of these Miller ones, and I really like them. The 3 gallon is a nice size, not too heavy to carry - I elevate it a little on some pavers and it stays pretty clean. I think you can find them in lots of places, including Amazon - a little pricey, but I think worth it.

I use a kiddie swimming pool outside and I keep a smaller waterer inside for night time, but only refill it at night. The pool is easy to fill with a hose and the chickens don't mind. Plus it is easy when it freezes to just break the ice. I also have a 5=gallon bucket waterer that works pretty easily.

I guess I don't have a very good pic of the 5gallon waterer but it is just the base and you can use any 5 gallon bucket. you just fill the bucket up with water, put the base on top and flip the bucket over. It creates a vaccum and works really well. I will put it under the shade trees in the summer so the chickens don't have to come to the pool since there aren't any shade trees around the pool. They also like to stand in the pool and keep their feet cool in the summer...
