Hi! I have been studying these ducks for a few years now at Lily Bay State Park in Maine. When they first appeared, there was two drakes that I thought was Swedish. Their females looked different, like they was either Mallard or American Black Duck. Last year I saw one of the females with two juveniles that again looked Swedish. Also, I saw a huge flock of (I think) American Black Ducks with one Swedish looking thing that had bad feet. I named that one Misfit and even caught it. This year, I saw a female with six ducklings with all except for one looking like her and a drake with similar markings. The female flies very well, for when I caught one of her ducklings to check out, she kept flying at me. She appears to be a much better mother than the American Black Duck mother who has eight ducklings. Is this a hybrid or new breed? I'm guessing those two drakes was Swedish, and either swam away or was abandoned.

I can't seem to find any pictures of the two drakes. I lost a lot of pictures a while back and their pictures might of been some of them.

they were most likely bought by someone, and then dumped when they got “too big” and “too messy”. best solution would be to try to catch and find them homes. which could be easy for the girl and ducklings, but lots of people don’t want drakes.

They are beautiful ducks and ducklings defiantly mixes. We’re you able to help the female with bad feet?
After I had caught her I brought her back to her flock. I have recently heard about an avian sanctuary here in Maine that I probably would of wanted to bring her to if I had known about it. She is the third duck I've seen up there with foot problems. The other two were American Black Ducks. The one with the least amount of trouble (Victor) just had a large V shape of webbing gone in it's foot. The other (Duffy) actually had toes missing. Duffy could still walk on land, but Misfit was very clumsy on land. Victor's foot didn't seem to bother him at all. Somebody told me that foot problem was from Pike coming up and biting their feet. This was obviously the case with Misfit, but maybe not with the other two. Victor probably cut his foot on something like fishing line. Duffy's feet looked like frostbite.

The mother female to me looks like a cross between a Cayuga and a blue Swedish. Blue Swedish can’t fly so it would have to be another breed or a cross.
Good luck!
Kelly
