Hello-
I am jumping into chickens in a big way! We bought 10 chickens from a friend. Husband told me we were getting chicks, they are not! And they are mixed when I was hoping for a specific breed and chicks, so I got back on the internet and :>P Ordered way too many of the breed I have been looking at- silver laced wyandotte and blue laced red wyandotte. I am hoping that the kids and I will have fun with the project and well I am excited and have been reading all I can about chickens. Kids have been excited to help feed and water the chickens so far. I have been trying to handle the birds as they were not used to being caught. After a week of chasing them I think they are starting to be better at getting caught but are still unsure about being held.

What is the best way to help the chickens get used to being handled?

Hi there and

Persistence and treats will help win them over in time, You will probably find that the new chicks will always be tamer than the ones you already have if you handle them from when they are very young.

Welcome from Va...yes, persistance and a very calming voice when you approach them...let them eat from as close to you as possible and then eventually they will look for you and eat from your hand...

Every time I enter their pen I have been calling "chick-a-dee" and it seems like they are responding. Also I think I am figuring out a feed schedule and they are more interested in the food when I bring it. The turken in the bunch likes to sit under me when I bring in my chair to sit and watch. They still are unsure of the kids (but then again so am I). The only two that I can really catch is the turken (he is bigger than the others and therefore easier to get my hands on) and the white silkie- he seems slower than the bunch, but I am trying hard.

Hopefully I can figure out what breed the other 8 are as that question is driving me nuts.
