New Year Block swap

Presume you mean the handbag flap?
Use freezer paper. Trace the pattern onto the freezer paper , non waxy side. Cut out. Now iron the waxy side of paper onto the right side of the fabric. Next cut out fabric with scant 1/4 inch all round . Pin fabric ,with paper still on, to the background fabric. Now you can needle turn the fabric under the paper and slip stitch on.
Or....
Take some bondaweb ,trace the design on, and cut out roughly, iron onto wrong side of fabric . Now cut out on the lines. The glue shrinks from the edges with heat so this is why you don't cut on the line till now. Peel off backing and iron into place on background . It is good to use baking parchment as pressing sheet so you don't get glue on your iron. With this method you should now machine satin stitch the edges of the design..
I think with the handle of this I would cut some fabric on the bias and press the edges under and then appliqué , another good aid is Roxanne's baste it glue which sticks fast quickly but rinses out with water.
Hope this helps!

Blocks are done! !! Not the original pattern I had planned, used every last piece of fabric I got, made several mistakes along the way, but was still fun!!! :)

@RustyHen your in Oregon, question, my mother used to talk about her father taking her to see the silver thaw exactly what is that? Have you seen it? something to do with ice. I can't remember and seeing Kassaundra's ice pics and the pics of Niagara falls frozen, well just the ice formed from the spray of the falls it just brought it to mind.
