New Year Block swap

Yes you would only need 4 repeats instead of 6 or 8, so your repeat can be a bit bigger and still work. I have been collecting repeat fabric for years and have 6 repeats in each of the fabrics I have collected so I can do this 4 square method and still have plenty left for coordinating

she did it the same as regular stack and wack but only 4 layers deep, and then cut squares instead of 60 degree triangles, then just made sure the same corner of the square was always to the center.
that's completely mindblowing! meaning not only the amazing quilt but that I didn't understand a word of how to do it! sometime @Kassaundra could you make a youtube showing how you would do the fabrics and cutting?

It really is easy, just a bit tedious at first. cut your fabric according the "repeat" in the print. For this pictured effect you will want 4 of these lengths of fabric (the entire width). Now you have 4 pieces of fabric that are the same exact print on each. Stack them one on top of the other, then starting in the middle take a very obvious place in the print, stick a pin through it in a precise spot you can easily duplicate, then one at a time pierce each lower layer of fabric in the same exact spot w/ the same pin, until all layers are pierced. now adjust the layers/pin so that is is straight up and down in all directions (not leaning left / right/ forward/ backwards). Now pin all layer of fabric to secure (normal way to pin fabric). repeat this process about 4 maybe 5 times, enough so you know no layers are shifting. For this quilt you will need to cut squares (the ones I've done 60 degree triangles and 6 layers) anyway secure each square set as you cut them. When you get the sets cut, to assemble them make sure whichever outside corner you place in the center ALL are the same corner in the center.

Once you do one of these you are forever keeping an eye out for fabrics that can make this effect and have a reasonable repeat. Another fabric source are bandanas, just make sure the print is the same and not subtly diff,

I have not done a 4 square one yet, just found this out yesterday, the 6 - 60degree triangles are easy, but need to be very precise and easy fabric handling since you are sewing complete bias edges. Your seams do not have to be 1/4 inch, but they HAVE to be the same.

My blocks are on their way. The most cost effective way of shipping was priority so they already have a return tracking number. This tracking # is 9114901123086754321436 and expected delivery is 1-23-14

What is this pattern called? It is beautiful! Looks 3D with the color choices! Would love to be able to quilt. Every one has done a great jib on here!

It is called Nell's Star. You can do it search for easy quilt block patterns, find one that speaks to you and just sew. The pattern will have cutting and sewing order instructions.

Thanks! I should check into it!! My Grandmother quilted and my Mom did a few. I have a lot of material of hers I could practice with. Thanks you all give tons of inspirations with your pieces and chatter!

Katsdar was it you that was talking about the stack and wack type of quilt????

I found out something today that might change my life forever (maybe a tad mellow dramatic) You can do an effective kaliedeoscope design w/ 4 pieces of fabric, SQUARES NOT TRIANGLES!!!!!!!!

Here is proof, this is not mine, but a FB friend

Wow, i like this!
