New Years traditions and/or folklore

Yep, not supposed to do laundry today! Don't know why, honestly, just the way my granma did it!

But, we take money outside the night before and bring it in on the first to show money how to come in in the new year.

We're also doing our Solstice bread today as we could not do it on Solstice this year. It's basically monkey bread but everyone gathers around and we make the balls and make wishes for people we know and love - no wishing for yourself! It is fun!
 
On new years eve at midnight we eat Pork & sauerkraut, for luck! On new years day we wash our hands with a silver dollar for money all year. A man must enter the house first on new years day, don't remember why!
My grammy and my Dad would eat sardines at midnight (yuck) for luck!
I make my own kraut and it is good! all it is, is cabbage and salt! If you keep it sealed with a brine filled bag, it cuts down on the scum!!!

From my Mom's side of the family I always cook pork on New Year's Day. My Nana always said if you don't eat pork, you will root your way through the New Year. I have no idea what that means, lol but it is something I grew up hearing every year. From my very short stint in Oklahoma, I cook black-eyed peas. I can't remember why, but I just remember our neighbor told us we must eat them on New Year's. I was only 7 at the time but it's strange how things like that stick in your memory.
 
we always have a bon fire----(except last night---too windy) and write down on strips of paper the things you want to see an end to.

and the souls of the departed......this past year we had eight deaths in our family and circle of friends. Last night was pretty sad for me......but TODAY you write down good things you want to see happen in 2009! and keep in a safe place till next bon fire....

Growing up we always had a bowl of black eyed peas on the table with the other items we were having...
this is from my dads side of family... Now my grandparents on mothers side considered blackeyed peas cow food..
We all had to have at least a spoon full for good luck.. no problem with me cause I like em.. my middle sister can't stand them but she will count out 12 on a spoon and swallow with milk,, LOL..

I fixed a pot of mississippi crowder I bought at famers market a few months back , today and put rope sausage, onion, garlic and a can of stewed tomatoes and cooked for several hours..
We took them to my brother in laws house and they fixed cornbread and thats what we had for new years.

I had two bowls full so I'm set I think for new year.

If I don't have very good luck.. Should do great in the gas department for a few days. LOL..
Oh also love sauerkraut , pork and mashed potatoes but haven't had it in quite a while.. will have to pull out moms recipe and make it soon..

I'm bad just though of something else I have been doing for at least 40 years.. but this is for Christmas.
I make sand tarts, sandies, and sour cream cookies for the holidays.. and if weather permits crazy crunch..

my boys who are now 18 and 22 look for the sand tarts every year. I have to split them between hubby, and two boys and put names on Bruce and Chets so they don't arugue over them.. LOL.. They devour them and then try and get the other guys.. LOL..

While we're on the subject of good luck stuff, any of yall "old time" southerners remember what to do when ya walk through a hot steam to keep the haints away?
