Thank you! Yeah, they are. We are currently building a chicken coop. And will have to build a second home for a roosters we may get. Luckily it shouldn’t have to be as big as the hens house.
Oh, go ahead and make it big! 😂

Boys being boys, it’s good for them to have as much room to spread out as possible. And your chicken plans may change over time. You will learn chicken math. Besides, no one ever complained and said “I wish I had built a smaller chicken coop”!

My husband and I have 5 children. Now that I’m getting older, when I babysit my grandchildren (2 at a time), I don’t know how I ever managed my own 5 by myself all day.* I know I had more energy then and worked faster. I just realized you have a 12 year spread from oldest to youngest. We have the same. Enjoy it while it lasts! I love having adult kids, but I sure do miss all the other ages.

*Edit: Actually, I do know how I managed 😉 They were my own children that I disciplined my own way, and none of them were allowed to behave the way my grandchildren do. I love my daughters and grandchildren, bless their hearts, but if they had more than two each, something would have to change.

We made an 8’x8’ coop for the girls. The boys will probably end up with closer to a 4x4. Then again my husband has a place in his heart for any boy and may make it much larger than the girls. Since he and my son are the only boys (that we know of right now).

I am trying to enjoy every min of it. Even the hard times. And 1 teenager and 1 preteen and one about there…there is a lot of interesting times lol. I get a lot of “is all those kids yours?” or just looks. I know it isn’t as common to have so many kids anymore but at one point it was common. My grandpa and grandma had 6 kids and my husbands grandpa had 6 as well. My husbands mom had 5. My mom only had 4 so we didn’t get those kinds of questions.

I can’t wait for grandchildren. Ok, so really, yes I can because I don’t want my kids being so young having kids (like still living in my house). But when the time comes I will be so excited!

I would give the males more space per bird than females. At least 3 foot each on the roosts. And not all continuous roost, but in different places within the coop. They also need more obstacles/hiding places in the run, but no blocked corners where one can get trapped by another. They will need additional waterers and feeders in more than one area, so that they cannot block each other from food and drink.

My kids are very spaced out too. I have 3 biological, that are almost 14 years apart, and two step daughters that are in between. My youngest calls his sister, his other mother. Our grandchildren are spaced out too. I love big families. I wish mine lived closer. Enjoy!

Don’t quote me on the size. Lol I don’t want them fighting or what have you. The problem right know is I don’t even know how many Roos we have. I’m just guessing that there is probably 3. And that isn’t looking at them and taking a wild shot. Just the hatchery only guarantees 90% accuracy. We ordered 15 but got 18. I mean really they could all be hens but I’m trying to be realistic about it. I don’t think I would get that lucky to have all hens. That would be too easy.

How far do your kids live from you? I really hope my kids don’t go too far. But where I live, they wouldn’t have very many job opportunities. They would have to travel and I want them to not have to rely on a factory job either.

We live almost 30 minutes from anywhere, so no one is really close by.
The kids/grandkids are scattered over 4 states. I think the furtherest is my youngest, who is almost 15 hours away, ( road travel) in Colorado, then a grown grandchild is 12 hours away in North East Tennessee, the rest are anywhere from 1.5 hours to 5.5 hours away by automobile. But almost all are in different directions. They still manage to see us pretty frequently.
The hardest time for me, was when my youngest moved out of state. I know how my mother felt now, when I moved out of state. There is still hope, I came home, eventually.

Im gonna ball like a baby if all my kids are that far away! I too moved though because I wanted out of this state. I ended up in North Carolina first, which I loved but came back home and then my ex husband joined the army(we were married at the time) and we got shipped off to Washington state, which again I loved. But we did come back home and I have been back ever since. I would love to move back to either state but this is home. And my momma is here. I hope your kiddos end up closer to you!

I'm older, so I just want the kids to be somewhere, where they will be happy. I do wish they were all closer to each other. Our oldest boy has land in Tennessee, and intends to move there when he retires, so I don't see them all moving closer...but I've got my animals, and I doubt they'll ever move away from home.😊

This is true! And animals won’t talk back….ok, yeah, my dogs do. They are full of attitude. Maybe my chickens will love me! Well there is at least 2 that just don’t like anyone lol
