I am brand new to the chicken world. I received two White Sussex for Mothers' Day and they have captured my heart. They wandered everywhere together. Unfortunately, while someone was taking care of them while I was away for 2 days, they flew the coop. After three days, only one returned. My heart broke for her as she was so lonely. I acquired an Australorp to keep her company. Was this a good idea to make my coop "diverse"? Anything I should watch for?
I have a diverse flock... Just watch as they get to know one another.
I know how hard this can be on the heart. Yes it is a great idea to add another bird. Chickens are highly social and do need the companionship of at least one other.
but she always comes back to be let back in.
