Newbie 1st Post - Let's get'er started

I built those nests just in time. My black sex links decided to start laying their first eggs. I got one on Saturday and two yesterday. They are small but perfectly shaped. One of them laid in the run but the other used the nest boxes. I guess I'm doing something right. Nothing like two chickens in one box. The other was probably just checking out the new egg.

How long does it take to fill this big basket with a bunch of tiny eggs?

Congratulations on your first eggs!!! I find that my chickens prefer to lay eggs when there is another chicken there laying as well. At one point, when I had broodies, I had 4 hens in, laying on the eggs!

Thanks for the ton of good information! Our playhouse is not used very much, but I hesitate to convert it, although eventually it may go that way! We just got an old (really old) ice house that we have to fix.

You put a lot of thought into this! Cudos to you!

Congrats!!!! Talk about being prepared. What size is that bucket? Mine is tiny. 2 doz.

Not very big. However those two little eggs make it look massive. I have 8 hens so I suppose it won't be long before I start giving eggs away.

I made a final addition to my coop with a better feeder taken from a post on the forum. It is the beginning to the end of feed waste for me. I love this 5 gallon bucket setup and it has been working fine for 8 chickens. I'm going 3+ weeks and haven't had to refill it yet. Of course the chickens get supplemental stuff to help out. I highly recommend it to anyone.

Thank you so much!! I have plenty of 5 gal buckets around here, all of them are food quality! So far, it looks like I'd just need the fittings and I'm good to go!!
