Newbie-brooder wood shavings

Hello, everyone! So glad to have found this site! As the title states, we are newbie chicken owners from the Les Cheneaux Islands, MI. We have 5-day-old Buff Orpingtons, and I'd like to switch their bedding over from paper towels. We purchased Eastern Upper Peninsula shavings, which are balsam and spruce. Is 5 days safe? It terrifies me that they will eat them. Sorry for my ignorance, just looking for reassurance. They are doing so great I’d hate to make a mistake. Over thinking everything

As long as they are eating their chick starter readily and recognize that as their food it should be fine to replace the paper towels with wood shavings as bedding.

Providing a little grit will help break down any bedding they eat. It's their natural instinct to put things in their mouth, so they will sample the bedding.
