Thank you everyone. It's funny how quickly you get attached to animals. I cried like baby when I found her. I'd been nursing her all day long. Left her in a nesting box while I ate supper about 10 - 15 minutes. When I went to check on her she had just passed as she was still warm. I bawled like a baby. I still have 10 girls, 4 of which are laying now.
What is a necropsy???
Okay so I bought a bag of Diatomaceous Earth but there are not directions on how to use it. I don't want my girls getting sick and dying any more. So I hear that DE, ACV, Molasses, Sardines, Tuna and Cat Food are good for chickens, is this true?
I think we are going to get 5 brown chickens (I don't know the breed yet just that they are laying hens, dual purpose) and 2 roosters I think one is a Banty and the other is a Silkie. What suggestions do you have for breeds that can survive extremely cold winters. I live in Alberta Canada and very close to the Rocky Mountains and would appreciate your opinions on which is the best breed to add to my flock.

You may also want to post on the BYC Canadian thread - "Canadians, check in here." Canadians originated a breed with very flat combs and ruggedness to handle their weather extremes. And for the life of me can't think of the name. I'll be back when I do.

A necropsy is an autopsy on an animal to attempt to determine cause of death. Some people do informal necropsies and post pictures in the ER Forum for help with diagnosis. You can also send a freshly deceased, refrigerated chicken body to an animal university or some avian vets for them to do a formal necropsy. Unfortunately, it is too late for that with your poor girl.
I would wait a bit before getting more chickens as you don't yet know what killed her.
And if you do bring in new birds, they should be quarantined to avoid introducing disease to your flock. Bringing in new birds is always stressful for all involved and it takes a long time to do it right.
Personally, I would return the DE. There is a lot of hype about it's wonders. I think it causes more harm than good sometimes. I also don't bother with any of those other supplements and treats either. I feel that keeping a large, clean, dry space for the birds with nutritionally complete food and clean water at all times is the best thing you can do for their health. I do also ferment my feed as I feel it offers better nutrition in the way of probiotics and I have almost zero waste.
