(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Definitely new to chickens, grew up in the 'burbs and now flying by the seat of my pants. We got chickens last winter from a friend who had to unload his quickly. We had some issues with wildlife and have one fo those left and 6+ month old chicks (one of whom turned out to be a rooster).
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
We just lost one and so now have 6 hens and 1 rooster.

(3) What breeds do you have?
1 RIR (it was 2, but that the one that just died), 1 leghorn, 2 amber links, 2 black sex links and 1 china black (I think).

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
We do love eating the eggs, but we also have a fair bit of land (about 2 acres, cleared plus 3 more with brush and forest) so I like integrating the chickens into our land use. I appreciate the lessons my daughters take from caring for them. And there's one that we do like to cuddle with.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
We do lots of hiking and biking, have a decent garden, play music and love Harry Potter.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
Four humans - mom, Dad, and two daughters, ages 5 & 8 plus the world's best cattle dog mix, Betsy.

Thanks for all the info! Will check the state thread and am now reading up on Coop design stuff. Also keeping an eye on another (one of the amberlinks) who seems like she's showing similar signs as the one we just lost :/.
Have you posted a thread about it yet? You should stop it before it gets out of hand. :/

Hi! :frow Welcome to BYC! Sorry the first year was such a rough learning curve for you. I take it you free range during the day. Are they locked up secure at night?

I did all my learning after I came home with 6 chicks, so I feel your pain. :barnie

Here's a fun fact, chickens are called pullets and cockerels until they are a year old, then they are hens and roosters.
