Newbie-Flying by the seats of pants...

I just did, yes. Also made a vet appointment, but couldn't get in until Wednesday pm (never mind if the cost goes well beyond the $80 consult).
Quick tip, if you take your chickens to vets, I suggest exotic pet vets. Normal vets specialize in cats and dogs and can therefore be wrong about chickens and other exotic pets.

Hi! :frow Welcome to BYC! Sorry the first year was such a rough learning curve for you. I take it you free range during the day. Are they locked up secure at night?

I did all my learning after I came home with 6 chicks, so I feel your pain. :barnie

Here's a fun fact, chickens are called pullets and cockerels until they are a year old, then they are hens and roosters.
Ah, I thought the pullet/hen thing was based on whether they've starting laying...good to know. And we do lock them up at night, for sure.

Yeah, I found one - a vet that sees birds - after calling around a bunch when the last one went downhill.

Thanks. I was a little slow on the uptake with the RIR we lost, but this one is my daughters' favorite - definitely in pet territory - so the stakes are high now.
I know what you mean. I lost my hen, Ethel, this Saturday. We put her asleep for repeated Sour Crop caused by reproductive issues. The first time she got Sour Crop, I took care of her and didn't think about it much after. The 2nd time, I realized how serious that was.

I'm sorry:hugs
Good luck finding out what is wrong!
