Hello everyone ... I've just joined and am hoping to benefit from your experience. Our family moved out to a farm a year ago and we have 4 horses, 3 barn cats (with kittens on the way any day now) and two dogs. There are also 3 resident moose and some nesting great grey owls. Hubby wants to try beekeeping, and I'm finally starting my dream of having chickens. The coop was delivered yesterday (with a covered run so those gorgeous owls don't help themselves) ... hubby was going to make me one but after a year he wisely gave up and ordered one from the local farm supply store ... and I pick up the chickens this morning. I'm starting with 4. Don't even know what breed - how's that for dumb? Our feed store brings in a bunch every spring so this year I will be joining a few others to claim my 4 birds out of the 800 that are arriving. Can you say gong show?

I'll post pictures of the birds later - for now I need to shovel more snow out of the way. Spring can't come soon enough!

Welcome to the world of chickens!!

Yes, you are not alone. Many of us have jumped in head first with not a clue. LOL But this is the place to come when you are in this situation!! You might want to stop by our learning center here on BYC for lots of great reads on all the aspects of raising your new brood to adulthood....

Great to have you aboard and I hope spring comes to your territory soon!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Congratulations on the new coop build and soon to be chicks! Hope spring gets there soon. Sounds like you have a nice farm and a lot of wildlife, owls are neat, and resident moose, scary?.... If you haven't seen it, you might like to check out the Canada thread for chicken keeping neighbors and maybe advice about how they deal with chickens in your climate https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/144/canadians-check-in-here

Well, so far so good. Managed to get 7 hens home and safely into the coop. They all tried to hide under the nesting boxes but hopefully have settled down by now. Can't wait to get my first egg! Now to figure out what kind I got (I was so excited I completely forgot to ask what breed they are - sheesh!). Now to figure out how to post some pics ...

Thank goodness for the FAQ ... okay I will try to post a couple of pics here. From looking on the "Breeds" tab my guess is that I have Golden Sex Link (seriously?? who thinks up these names??) but two of them are alot darker so I'm not sure.

UFA builds a pretty nice coop, eh?

Congratulations on your new chickens! It will take them a few days to settle in. Do you know how old they are? Sex Links are a cross bred so that they can be sexed at hatch by their down color, the girls are red/buff and boys are white/yellow... most hatcheries have their own crosses and give them prettier names :) Red Star, Golden Comet, ISA Brown, Golden Buff, Cinnamon Queen etc are all types of sex links.

Now those are much nicer names! I'll have to ask next time I'm in town. They are 19 weeks, so should start laying pretty quickly, I hope. We'll see.
