Hello everyone ... I've just joined and am hoping to benefit from your experience. Our family moved out to a farm a year ago and we have 4 horses, 3 barn cats (with kittens on the way any day now) and two dogs. There are also 3 resident moose and some nesting great grey owls. Hubby wants to try beekeeping, and I'm finally starting my dream of having chickens. The coop was delivered yesterday (with a covered run so those gorgeous owls don't help themselves) ... hubby was going to make me one but after a year he wisely gave up and ordered one from the local farm supply store ... and I pick up the chickens this morning. I'm starting with 4. Don't even know what breed - how's that for dumb? Our feed store brings in a bunch every spring so this year I will be joining a few others to claim my 4 birds out of the 800 that are arriving. Can you say gong show?
I'll post pictures of the birds later - for now I need to shovel more snow out of the way. Spring can't come soon enough!

and Welcome To BYC! Congratulations on the new coop build and soon to be chicks! Hope spring gets there soon. Sounds like you have a nice farm and a lot of wildlife, owls are neat, and resident moose, scary?.... If you haven't seen it, you might like to check out the Canada thread for chicken keeping neighbors and maybe advice about how they deal with chickens in your climate
Red Star, Golden Comet, ISA Brown, Golden Buff, Cinnamon Queen etc are all types of sex links.
