Hi there,
I am excited to learn lots from all the chicken parents around the world :) I gave loads of questions and one in particular about my newly hatched chick (incubated) who has pasty butt which I have treated today but also has a dark large lump to the right and a bit below her bottom. She is chirping a lot and it gets very loud, obviously painful when she poops. I would really appreciate any advice as I am a first time mum, thanks

Hello, and
welcome-byc.gif

The chick may have a partial or complete hernia. Hard to say what it is without seeing it. If you get 10 posts you can put up a pic which would help.

Best wishes.

Welcome to BYC!

Sorry about your chick. For the pasty butt, make sure the bird knows where the water is by dipping the beak in the water as dehydration is the first cause for pasty butt. A heaping tablespoon of sugar in the water for a few days can help with pasty butt and get the blood sugar in good order.

You can post pics immediately after joining now. :-) This area you are seeing could be the last of the egg yolk not quite absorbed yet, or even a small navel infection. I would give this little guy a bit more heat than the others. If this group of babies is only a few days old, I would turn up the heat a few extra degrees for a couple days. Make sure he is able to access the water and feed ok. Dip his beak in the water so he knows where it is and if he is slower than the others, you may need to separate him for a couple days until he can keep up.

Have you stopped by our learning center here on BYC? Lots of great tips and hints on raising your new brood and all other aspects of keeping poultry.....

Quote: Good to know! And great for all those newbies with problems causing them to require urgent assistance. I was wondering why someone new had been able to post pics on their first post but others after that couldn't so I thought it was an error, lol...
