Newbie from San Diego :) and so excited to learn!

Hey BYC!
Im jared from san diego and I only have 1 chicken (best chicken in the world

) I'm a 16 year old guy and am so obsessed with learning about any kind of poultry. I loved to read the forums (especially because nobody talks about chickens here!) so i decided to join.

I got my first chicken a year ago from a very odd biology teacher. She kept a small chicken in a cage in the back of the class! The small bantam chicken was brought in one day and everyone was shocked. She was crippled in one leg and hopped around in the cramped cage. I became so interested in chickens and was soon obsessed. By the end of the year teachers had complained about the smell and she needed to find it a new home. After a few days had passed nobody seemed interested so I asked my mom ( told her the sad story of her life) and to my surprise she told me I could have her. Now becky hops around in her coop and grassy run all day in the sun. I'm really excited to ask you guys and make her life even better.

I also have two parakeets and a rat but she is by far my favorite pet

Normally, chickens do not do well by themselves. Can you get a "friend" for her. I'm so happy that you gave her a better life. Chickens need some space! You'll learn so much here. Welcome from the California Coast!

Welcome! I'm new here too and already addicted! I'm so glad you got to bring her home to give her a great life. I agree she needs a friend(s), we have 6 and I promise they will provide hours of entertainment. "Chicken keep-away" is by far my favorite to watch, they are just like kids. Be sure to go to the page about breeds, if you get more, there is a ton of great info on there.

Welcome!! There is a thread for San Diego Chickens under "Chickenstocks, Meetups, etc" and if you want to get together with our group sometime, we usually meet every few months! Its a lot of fun to talk "chicken" with everyone.
