Hello,

I'm a new chicken mom. I got (8) day-old chicks from a local lumber store about a week and a half ago. They are currently in a DIY brooder in my basement. They started out in a kiddie pool, then quickly outgrew it. I'm using a combination of heat lamp and mama heating pad.

I live on 3 acres out on the country, next to woods and corn fields. When we bought the house half of the shed (9'x10') was already turned into a chicken coop. It is pretty sparse though: 2 brood boxes on the floor, 1 branch stapled to the wall, and 2 windows. We are in the process (if it ever stops snowing) of revamping the coop as well as the run.

I'm extremely excited to start this new adventure. I've been reading this website for quite sometime, and thought it was time I officially join.

Including your general location on your profile will assist others. Location, climate, season etc can be important factors when members are responding to any questions you may have and vice versa.

You might want to also Find Your State Thread and pop in and say hello.

BYC has Topic of the Week discussions which I have found to be a great resource, informative and sometimes entertaining; so definitely worth checking out. This one may be of particular interest to you at this stage:
Topic of the Week - Keeping the Flock Safe from Predators

If you would like to share Pictures and Stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)
